Introduction to Surah Al-Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf is the 18th chapter of the Holy Qur’an, which was revealed in Makkah. It has 110 verses and 12 sections. Surah Kahf describes different types of events that provide guidance to humans in different aspects of life. This Surah warns about belief, morality, trust in Allah, and the timely shining of the world.

Virtues of Surah Al-Kahf

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described the recitation of this Surah as a very virtuous act, especially on Friday. It is narrated from Abu Sa’id that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

Hadith on the Virtues:

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“A light will be illuminated between the person who reads Surah Kahf on Friday and the next Friday.” (Sahih Muslim)

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The person who remembers the first 10 verses of Surah Kahf will be protected from the greatest temptation of the Antichrist.”

This hadith is mentioned in various books, including the true Muslim Sunnah Abu Dawood and Masnad Ahmad. This shows that in the early verses of Surah Kahf, there is a spiritual power and insight that can protect the believers from great temptations like the Dajjal.

In Mecca

The reason for the revelation of Surah Kahf was that the Quraish sent two men to the Jewish scholars to test the truth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He told the scholars to tell us about Muhammad because you are the people of the Book, and you know more of the Prophets. Jewish scholars suggested three questions about some of the youths whose story is strange. About a Black man who travelled to the East and the West and what he did about the soul, he said that if Muhammad gives the correct answer to these questions, he is a prophet, or else he is talking to himself.

When the Quraish returned and asked these questions to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that I would answer them tomorrow but did not say Insha’Allah. The revelation of the revelation was stopped for 15 days, which raised doubts in the people of Makkah and started making fun of you on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was upset over the delay, then Gabriel was revealed with Surah Kiev, which included answers to all these questions, as well as a gentle warning that you should say insha’Allah.

Famous Incidents in Surah Al-Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf contains four major stories, each rich with meaning and spiritual insight:

The People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf)

A few good and righteous youths took away from the atmosphere of falsehood and misguidance to protect the faith and took refuge in a cave at the trust of Allah. Lord Karim kept them as sleepy for many centuries, and then their awakening became a clear argument for their power, unconditional mercy, and resurrection on the Day of Judgement.

The Man with Two Gardens

This is the story of a wealthy man whom Allah Almighty has given two beautiful green and fruit-loaded gardens, but wealth has made him proud until he denies the last and has always considered wealth. But when the ungratefulness and arrogance exceeded, Allah took away all his blessings so that it would be clear that without thanksgiving, the blessing of destruction without wealth and humility goes on.

Musa (AS) and Khidr (AS)

This is an unusual and wise journey in which a secret servant of Prophet Moses comes out to seek insight from Hazrat Khizar. The servants whom the Lord has given knowledge in the universe. In this journey, Moses observes some of the actions that appear to be against justice, but over time, his deep wisdom and luxuries are revealed. This event teaches us that the search for true knowledge requires patience and honour, and the wisdom of Allah is far deeper and far from human understanding.

The Story of Dhul-Qarnayn

Dhul-Qarnaym was a visionary temperament and powerful, whom Allah Almighty bestowed knowledge and power upon. They travelled to the east and west of the earth not only for victory but also for justice reform and peace. At one point, they found a nation that was afraid of devastating and tempting tribes like Majuj. Dhul-Qarnaym called on their cry and built a great wall with the resources given by Allah that hindered the path of these tempting nations.

Allah’s Mercy Never Fails

Whether he is a sincere young man of the cave or a believer in search of knowledge, he is a believer in the test. The mercy of Allah is a shadow in every situation with them, which is never diminished or never stops.
